 As a six year-old girl growing up in Kansas, my earliest memories include painting decorations, with my mother, on merchant’s windows for the changing season and holidays. I began experimenting with other mediums in my teens and was recognized by the local newspaper as they showcased some of my work. Much of my inspiration came from my mother who offered love and encouragement. Although she left this life too soon, she continues to have a prominent influence in my direction in life and in art. My mother taught children who were blind and visually impaired to experience what life had to offer through touch. This appreciation of art and texture created a dream-to-reality which started six years ago with the development of my business, Gretchen’s Creations L.L.C.. This allowed me to explore, among other creations, the technique of adding dimension to walls through the manipulation of water-based plaster and color to create a texture-enriched organic landscape. These walls created an ambience that enhanced visual senses while offering the experience of touch. My work with walls evolved while still using the much same influences and products. I am currently creating portraits and look forward to future possibilities using this unmatched medium. This art form exemplifies the significance of texture beyond the beauty recognized by the eye. My hope is one’s hand is drawn in before the eye and after the heart.
